Alright, let’s keep it real. Everyone wants to improve their pickleball ranking, (whether it’s a 3.0 to a 3.5 or 3.5 to 4.0) and let’s be honest—it feels pretty good to climb that ladder.

Spoiler alert: It’s not just about buying the latest paddle or wearing the coolest headband (though we do love some stylish court swag). The truth is simple—you win more matches, you rank up. Period.

But how do you win more matches?

Here’s one golden piece of advice:

👉 Find the one thing that’s holding you back the most—and fix it.

 

What's Holding You Back?

Grab a pen (or open that notes app you never use) and write down five things that YOU think are currently holding you back. Be brutally honest. Here are some examples to get your brain bouncing:

  • I get tired halfway through matches
  • My footwork is slow
  • I lose focus after I make a mistake
  • I don’t recover well between matches
  • My dink game… yeah, let’s not talk about it 😬 

Now look at that list. Which one, if solved, would instantly lead to better performances? That’s your target. That’s your one thing.

 

Step 1: Create Awareness

Most people float through matches like a pickleball ghost—swinging, sweating, and hoping things magically click. But pros? They KNOW what’s working and what’s not. They track it. They talk about it. They obsess over it (in a healthy way, of course).

Take a moment to reflect:

  • Are you slowing down after Game 1?
  • Are you moving like you’re wearing ankle weights?
  • Do you keep making the same mistakes under pressure?

Awareness is your launchpad. Once you name the problem, you can start solving it.

 

Step 2: Make a Plan (Not a Wish)

Now, let’s get practical.

Once you’ve identified the #1 thing holding you back, it’s time to create a plan to eliminate it. Want to move faster? Improve reaction time? Stay injury-free?
